INTRODUCTION

Service to mankind is service to God. Our incredible has long way of traditional out look to take care of others; especially Tamil culture is famous for its way of approach in helping others. Generous donations made by the Indians during the natural calamity shows the mentality of helping the fellow citizens in a needy situation.Our father of the nation rightly said “The student community should be actively involved in the service of rural society to eliminate social disability”. Bearing service of society as the prime aim, National service Scheme was launched by Union Education Minister Dr.V.K.R.V.Rao on September 24, 1969.

OBJECTIVES OF NSS

  • Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
  • Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  • Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems

NSS MOTTO

The Motto of NSS “NOT ME BUT YOU“, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. NSS helps the students develop appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration to other living beings. The philosophy of the NSS is well doctrined in this motto, which underlines/on the belief that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society on the whole and therefore, the NSS volunteers shall strive for the well-being of the society.

NSS SYMBOL

The symbol for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa, India. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, The symbol thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social change.

NSS DAY

NSS was formally launched on 24th September 1969, the birth Centenary year of Father of Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities.

REGULAR ACTIVITIES

Under this, students undertake various need based programmes in the adopted villages, College Campuses and Urban slums during weekends or after college hours. 120 hours per year and 240 hours for two consecutive years.

General Orientation of NSS Volunteers. NSS Day Celebrations 20 hrs
Career guidance for the NSS Volunteers, by the Experts and campus work 30 hrs.
Skill development (first aid, disaster management, public speaking, leadership motivation, HIV/AIDS awareness etc.) 26 hrs.
Community Development Projects (in the adopted village) – Survey in the village, tree plantation, Health, Cleanliness, Road Safety, Visits to Homes, technical training for rural youth and SHG, sanitation, women development programmes, consumer Awareness etc. 44 hrs
Total 120 hrs.

SPECIAL CAMPING PROGRAMME

Under this, 7 days camp organized in the adopted villages with a specified theme being given by Govt. of India by involving local youth. The Special camp should be conducted only in the adopted village (for second year NSS volunteers) at least for three years continuously.

ACTIVITIES OF NSS VOLUNTEERS AND ADOPTION OF VILLAGE

The activities under NSS are two-fold, viz.,

  • Regular Activities which are undertaken during the working days of the semester and
  • Special Camping activities for 7 days duration in the adopted villages / Urban slum during vocation.
  • 3. Each NSS unit in the college is expected to adopt a nearby village/slum and work for its all-round development. Regular Activities and Special Camp should preferably be organized in the adopted village/rural unit/slum for this purpose.

DUTIES OF NSS VOLUNTEERS

NSS volunteer should put in

  • Establish rapport with the people in the project area
  • Identify needs, problems and resources of the community
  • Plan programmes and carry out the plan
  • Relate learning experience towards finding solutions to the problem identified, and
  • Record the activities in work diary systematically and assess the progress periodically and effect changes as and when needed.

CODE OF CONDUCT FOR NSS VOLUNTEERS:

  • All volunteers shall work under the guidance of a group leader nominated by the NSS Programme Officer.
  • They shall make themselves worthy of the confidence and co-operation of the group community leadership
  • They shall scrupulously avoid entering into any controversial issue
  • They shall keep day-to-day record of their activities / experience in the diary and submit to the group leader / Programme Officer for periodic guidance
  • It is obligatory on the part of every volunteer to wear the NSS BADGE while on work

NSS unit of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College (#SMVEC_NSS)

The National Service Scheme Unit (NSS) of SMVEC functions with a volunteer strength of 100 students. It has been nurtured by Chairman and Managing Director Mr.M. DHANASEKARAN, Vice chairman Mr.V.SUGUMARAN M.L.A., Secretary Dr.K.NARAYANASAMY, Director cum Principal Dr.V.S.K.VENKATACHALAPATHY and Heads of the Departments for one reason or the other, more particularly, for its leadership development in student – volunteers, both male and female. The services rendered by NSS are varied in nature: Health, Sanitation, Education, Environment Legal Aid, Veterinary, and Physical services.

NSS-SMVEC has the objective of “Personality development of students through community service”.Mass programme for Functional Literacy, Youth Leadership Development Camps, Eco-Development Camps, General Orientation and Special Orientation Programmes, Personality Development and Career Guidance are such activities.

Regular blood donations to the Public, Tree plantation, coordination with various activities of the college like Republic day, Independence Day, First year induction day, Founders day, Special lectures in Life skill development etc., are regularly coordinated by our NSS volunteers.

NSS student-volunteers are given priority to participate in state level and national level youth activities viz. Puducherry book fair 2013, Rallies, Quiz competition etc., The college is surrounded by many villages. Many awareness programs to develop the down trodden people are conducted to enlighten their life.Govt. of Puducherry, Elections Department insisted to start “Electoral Literacy Club” in order to ensure 100 percent enrollment of eligible students in the new electoral role.
