Nila CRS

Nila Community Radio Station, a non-profit organization with 90.4 MHz was established by Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College for the first time in Puducherry and start rendering its service since 2005.   It consists of members of the community and its programmes are based on community access and participation.

With the avowed objective, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College is intended and interested to promote social activities for the community.  To attain this objective, Nila CRS is organizing programme focusing on Education, Career Guidance, Women Empowerment, Health Awareness, Agriculture etc.,  We are also launching local community programmes like medical camp for rural children and adults, importance and benefits of  Agriculture for Farmers, Science for women, awareness program on organic farming, recycling of solid and bio-waste, self-employability for villagers etc. with the help of our faculties, students, invited guests and local community members. To the extending hands of our service, we are covering around 40 villages.

Nila CRS successfully composed DST sponsored 365 episodes of Science for Women project. This project is aimed towards creating awareness about science, health and sanitation issues among community women and children. Programmes ranges from debate to skit, Interview to workshop with community women.

We have completed Planet of Earth project with the support of DST, which creates awareness and scientific information about earth to community people. In which, 365 episodes have been broadcasted under this project. Broadcasting time extends from morning 9.00 am to evening 6.00 pm. Several other programs organized through Nila CRS are:

Nila CRS has taken the responsibility of executing Baseline study to work for the project of Disaster Preparedness through Community of Practice ( CoP) in 2019. It aims to create awareness on disaster management and disaster preparedness through CoP  and thereby raising knowledge level, disaster management and disaster preparedness skills and converting listeners to learners. 

The Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India has initiated a programme on Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, 2020 (STIP) in association with DST. In connection with this, it has launched an orientation and a capacity strengthening workshop on July 27th and 30th respectively. Nila CRS under the tutelage of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College started broadcasting the audio and creative/jingle from 1st August, 2020.   

With profound interest on collecting information for nation’s address towards STIP 2020, Nila CRS conducted  Focused Group Discussion and gathered messages from the participants in different perspectives. The initiative taken by the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, 2020 (STIP) in association with Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia, New Delhi helps in identifying the grass root level glitches of our locality and hopefully expecting the solution for the same by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The station can build rapport with the citizens through targeted news coverage, public interest and opinion stories, and fostering communication and collaboration within the community itself.

Science, Technology and Health Communication Anubhav Project for Senior Citizens were initiated by Vigyan Prasar. The main objective of the program is to create audio Programmes on Science, Technology and Health that would cater to the needs of Senior Citizens and also involve them actively in the process of content creation. We have recorded and broadcasted the experiences of Senior citizens living in Puducherry through community radio and i-radio.  To carry out the project, Nila CRS had partnership with Serene Pelican and Helpage India for creating episodes of Anubhav Project.

We invited the doctors of specialization such as cardiologist, physiotherapist, gynaecologist, orthopaedist, General, neurologist, dentist, and ophthalmologist and arranged interviews hosted by Senior citizens. The doctors clarified the doubts of the senior citizens and suggested the ways they should take care of themselves, and the precautionary measures they should adopt. The questions posed relating to health problems of senior citizens were clearly answered by the doctors.  We recorded the programs under Anubhav vidian Prasar and broadcasted the experiences of Senior Citizens, doctors interview, and  Expert Scientist living in Puducherry through community radio and i-radio, and hence it reached the senior citizens in all locations from which  they got benefited. 

In assistance with UNICEF, the following Covid Awareness program was carried out to create awareness among the public from the pandemic disease.

NILA CRS has started working on the project WASH & Climate Literacy Campaign initiated by Seeking Modern Applications for Real Transformation (SMART), to create awareness among the community about the environmental concerns like pollution, climate change , bio-diversity etc.,

About the event:

The Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY), launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, aims to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens in India. Based on the AVYAY scheme, Nila CRS 90.4 FM, located at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College, has developed a community-driven radio project to improve the welfare of senior citizens in rural areas. The scheme’s focus on raising awareness about senior citizen welfare, fostering intergenerational bonding, and ensuring access to basic amenities aligns seamlessly with our community radio initiatives. 

Key components of the scheme include:

  • Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens (IPSrC): Providing shelter, food, medical care, and opportunities for active engagement.
  • State Action Plan for Senior Citizens (SAPSrC): Encouraging state-specific strategies for senior welfare.
  • Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY): Distributing assistive devices to elderly individuals with age-related disabilities.
  • Senior Citizen Opportunities for Productive Engagement (SCOPE): Connecting skilled senior citizens with employment opportunities.
  • Seniorcare Ageing Growth Engine (SAGE): Promoting products and services to improve senior citizens’ quality of life.

Role of Nila CRS 90.4 FM in the AVYAY Project

Under the AVYAY initiative, Nila CRS 90.4 FM, through its community radio platform at    Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College, has taken a proactive role in raising awareness and fostering dialogue on senior citizen welfare. By broadcasting specially curated episodes, conducting surveys in neighbouring villages, and engaging with local communities, the project seeks to:

  • Educate the public about available schemes and resources.
  • Highlight challenges faced by senior citizens and advocate for their solutions.

Episode 3 focuses on raising awareness about the legal rights of senior citizens under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and other provisions of the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY). It educates the elderly about their right to financial security, protection against mistreatment, and access to legal aid.
