World Standard Day 2025

The Department of Civil Engineering proudly celebrated World Standards Day 2025 with a seminar on the global theme, “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals” on 14th October 2025

The event brought together students, faculty, and industry experts to reflect on the importance of standards and collaboration in building a sustainable and inclusive future.

A Ceremonial Beginning: Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu

Every great event begins with a moment of reverence, setting the tone for the celebration that follows. Our program commenced on a graceful and respectful note with the rendition of the Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu, the state song of Tamil Nadu.

Gracious Welcome Address

Following the soulful rendition of the Tamil Thaai Vazhthu, the gathering was warmly welcomed by Faculty member of Department Civil Engineering. In his welcome address, he extended heartfelt greetings to the Chief Guest Dr. Gangineni Ramesh Babu, Head of the department, faculty members, and students who had assembled to commemorate this important global observance.

Honouring the Chief Guest

A special moment of the program was honouring our Chief Guest, Dr. Gangineni Ramesh Babu, Associate Professor of Physics at Pondicherry University, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to physics and academia.

World Standards Day, observed every year on October 14, honors the collaborative efforts of thousands of experts worldwide who develop international standards. These standards ensure quality, safety, and interoperability across industries—making our products, technologies, and systems work seamlessly together.

Spotlight on SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 17 (SDG 17) emphasizes the power of partnerships in achieving all other global goals. It calls for stronger cooperation between governments, academia, industry, and civil society to share resources, knowledge, and technology for the common good.

The seminar highlighted how engineering standards act as the backbone of these partnerships, enabling collaboration across borders and sectors. Standards provide a common language of trust and quality, ensuring that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.

A Shared Vision for a Better World

Through this event, SMVEC reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing socially responsible engineers who understand the importance of quality, ethics, and sustainability. The seminar underscored that standards are more than technical guidelines—they are tools that foster trust, cooperation, and shared growth across the globe.

As SMVEC continues to promote research, innovation, and global partnerships, the college remains aligned with the spirit of SDG 17—working together to create “A Shared Vision for a Better World.”

Vote of Thanks

The program concluded on a gracious note with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. S. Sudararaman, Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to all dignitaries, resource persons, faculty members, students, and participants for making the seminar a grand success.
