Reach the unreach – Indian space programme

An insightful technical talk titled “Reach the Unreached – Indian Space Programme” was successfully organized to create awareness about India’s remarkable journey in space science and its applications for national development.

Welcome Address

The programme commenced with a warm welcome address delivered by Dr. K. Hemalatha, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In her address, she highlighted the importance of space technology in engineering education and emphasized the role of ISRO in inspiring young minds towards innovation and research.

Introduction of the Chief Guest

Following the welcome address, the Chief Guest introduction was delivered by Dr. R. Ravi Sankar, who briefly outlined the distinguished career and contributions of the Chief Guest in India’s space missions. The session set the tone for an engaging and informative interaction.

Chief Guest Address

The keynote lecture was delivered by Mr. D. Gokul, Project Manager, ISRO (SDSC-SHAR). His talk provided a comprehensive overview of India’s space programme and its vision of reaching the unreached through space technology.

Evolution of India’s Space Programme

The lecture traced the inspiring journey of ISRO, starting from the early days of space activities at Thumba in 1963, the launch of Rohini-75, and the visionary leadership of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the Father of the Indian Space Programme. The speaker emphasized ISRO’s vision of using advanced technologies to solve problems of the common man.

Space Technology for National Development

He elaborated on how space technology contributes to India’s sustained development through:

  • Satellite communication for television broadcasting, DTH services, tele-education, tele-medicine, and emergency communication.
  • Meteorological services for weather forecasting, disaster warning, and climate studies.
  • Village Resource Centres (VRCs) that empower rural communities by providing access to education, healthcare, and information.

Earth Observation and Societal Applications

The session highlighted the extensive applications of remote sensing in:

  • Agriculture and soil management
  • Water resource identification
  • Disaster management including flood and drought monitoring
  • Forest and environmental conservation
  • Urban planning and land-use mapping

These applications clearly demonstrated how space technology plays a vital role in reaching remote and underserved regions.

Major ISRO Missions and Achievements

The Chief Guest showcased India’s landmark missions such as:

  • Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2
  • Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan)
  • PSLV missions, including the world record launch of 107 satellites
  • Contributions towards future reusable launch vehicles and advanced aerospace missions

Future Vision of Space Exploration

Mr. Gokul concluded his technical discussion by sharing ISRO’s future vision, which includes reusable launch vehicles, space exploration missions, clean energy solutions, space tourism, and inter-planetary travel, inspiring students to be part of the next generation of space innovators.

Closing Note

The programme concluded with a closing note, expressing gratitude to the Chief Guest for his enlightening lecture and to all participants for their enthusiastic involvement. The session successfully motivated students by showcasing how India’s space programme continues to bridge gaps, empower society, and truly “reach the unreached.”
