A Shared Vision for a Better World

On October 14, 2024, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Engineering College (SMVEC) celebrated World Standards Day with a seminar titled “Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for the Changing Climate”. This event, organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, was part of the college’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

The lamp lighting ceremony at SMVEC was more than a mere ritual; it was a symbolic gesture of unity and collective aspiration. As the dignitaries lit the oil lamps, they invoked blessings for the success of the event and the well-being of all present. The act of lighting the lamp together fostered a sense of community and shared purpose among the attendees.

Welcome speech

The World Standards Day 2024 celebration commenced with an insightful welcome address by Dr. A. A. Arivalagar, Dean of Academics. He emphasized the critical role of standards in fostering a sustainable future, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13): Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Chief Guest Dr. Nehru Kumar Vaithilingam, in his presentation added the importance of KYOTO PROTOCOL (CoP3, 1997…… 2005), PARIS PACT (Cop21, 2015). The existence of various Standards for Changing Climate such as United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), SYNTHESIS REPORTS, The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF & CC), The National Disaster Management Authority(NCDMA),  Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC), Environmental, Social, and Governance  (ESG) Reporting, and Business Responsibility & Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) were clearly briefed to the students with their importance.

Environmental Standards such as ISO 14067:2018 (Green House Gases); ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management Systems) and the different standards on climate change such as ISO 27913 (Carbon dioxide capture, transportation and geological storage); ISO 27914:2017 (Carbon dioxide capture, transportation and geological storage); ISO 14066;2023 (Environmental Information) was also shared during the seminar so that students are aware on the existence of these standards for a sustainable living in this planet earth. Some of the Decarbonization Technologies and vision of INDIA by 2070 was also highlighted to the participants in the seminar.
