Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of mankind.

Civil engineering is the oldest discipline after military engineering which is engrossing the civilization world.

CE is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment.

The several sub-disciplines of civil engineering are environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, geophysics, geodesy, control engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, earth science, atmospheric sciences, forensic engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, materials engineering, offshore engineering, quantity surveying, coastal engineering, surveying, and construction engineering.

Civil

CE has the multi-dimensional sphere in the public sector from municipal to national government, and in the private sector from individual homeowners to international companies.

Civil engineering department which has relevance and importance in all walks of human life came into existence in this institution from the academic year 2012-13.

Curriculum and Syllabi

Laboratories

Material Testing Laboratory I

The materials testing laboratory-I, helps to determine tensile test, torsion test, hardness test, impact strength, shear test, stiffness of springs, types of strain gauges, universal testing machine on steel and metals. The students will be able to infer the suitability of these materials for strength.

Objectives

  • To understand the preparation of a specimen for the desired strength of materials in relating to the analysis and design of various structural elements.
  • To Study the various component parts of the Universal Testing Machine (U.T.M.) & test procedures of various practical’s to be performed.
  • To conduct a tensile test on a mild steel specimen and determine the following: (i) Limit of proportionality (ii) Elastic limit (iii) Yield strength (iv) Ultimate strength (v) Young’s modulus of elasticity (vi) Percentage elongation (vii) Percentage reduction in area.
  • To conduct hardness test on mild steel, carbon steel, brass and aluminum specimens.
  • To conduct torsion test on mild steel or cast iron specimens to find out modulus of rigidity.
  • To find the values of bending stresses and young’s modulus of elasticity of the material of a beam simply supported at the ends and carrying a concentrated load at the centre.
  • To conduct shear test on specimens under double shear.
  • To Study various types of strain Gauges.

Scope

  • To understand the various strength of materials.
  • To know about the tests to measure material strength, ductility, hardness.
  • The course will enable the students to evaluate the mechanical properties of materials subjected to the loads and report and verify the same as per Indian standards available and know where the mechanical property is used in the engineering design.

Innovative Projects

A young mind is the sharpest mind. It learns quickly and acts quicker. The education system today focuses on books and rote-learning, but times are changing as these young geniuses, who chose to take a different path, have proved. They have picked machines over books and ideas over words.

As a part of the academic curriculum, the students are required to carry out a project work during their final year. Among them few of our final year students have come up with innovative ideas. Students have completed a prototype and demonstrated the working of their model before our faculty members. To enhance the spirit of doing innovative project by the students, our institution awards Rs. 10000/- to the best project every year on Engineers Day.

Experimental Study on Purification of Leachate and Analysis Its Application in Plant Growth

D.Davakumar
A.Eshwaran
M.Mouleeswar

Abstract

Landfill leachate generation is a significant polluting factor of the environment. A leachate is a liquid that passing through solid matter, extracts soluble or suspended solids, or any other component of the material through which it has passed. Landfill leachate is a significant polluting factor in the environment. Leachate generation causes more problems in municipal landfill sites. The leachate is a toxic liquid leached from the landfill containing dissolved and suspended matter in it. Leachate is formed when precipitation or atmospheric moisture enters the landfill that is undergoing degradation. The landfill leachate contains organic and inorganic compounds, heavy metals, and pathogens, if not collected or properly treated they can pollute both surface and groundwater. Landfill leachate may be characterized as a water-based solution of contaminants: dissolved organic matter, inorganic macro components, heavy metals. Here, we are using a treatment process including Marine sand and fly ash filter. The filtrate from the leachate treatment process contains nutrients useful to plant growth such as the nitrogen (N) content which plays an important role in crop yield along with different suitability of leachate concentration for irrigating plants also studied. Leachate-treated plants had better growth performance than those receiving water alone (control) in terms of plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves. 20% filtered leachate concentration shows higher growth in height, stem diameter, leaf area, number of leaf in the plants Leachate irrigation is beneficial to plant growth and soil fertility enhancement under certain conditions so it can be used in vegetation irrigation.
